The learning goal of the module is to provide participants with conceptual frameworks and tools for designing and implementing a successful strategy for a Research Infrastructure in national and international contexts. The strategic management is concerned with the process of setting organisation’s long term objectives, evaluating the means of achieving them, formulating and implementing strategic plans.

This module, delivered from the 23rd to the 25th of January 2019, provided the conceptual lens and analytical tools for RIs in order to achieve long-term goals. The emphasis was on understanding the complexity of RI environment, decision-making and implementing the strategy process within the organisation. In line with the vision of the Executive Master, the learning points of the module, coordinated by professor Elisabetta Marafioti, from University of Milano-Bicocca, provided a theoretical basis for strategy improvement, based on mainstream management theory and contemporary business experience.

Thanks to the talks of Jaques Demotes, Director General of ECRIN-ERIC, and Jennifer Edmond, President of the Board of Directors in DARIAH, the participants got some insights about the role of strategy and strategic thinking in the European Research Infrastructures context. The emphasis was on strategic planning and the features and peculiarities of Research Infrastructures. A fruitful discussion has arisen, among participants, in order to understand the importance of strategic design and implementation.
