The first-ever call for applications for the recently launched Executive Masters in Management of Research Infrastructures closed on 31st May. With a total of 115 applications received, it was a great success, clearly showing that there is a need for tailor-made training for research infrastructure managers.
Offering a mix of face-to-face and online modules, the Masters programme is tailored towards the needs of busy executives looking to acquire additional skills and competencies required to successfully manage research infrastructures. It was developed within RItrain, an EU-funded Horizon 2020 project aimed at improving and professionalising training for research infrastructure managers and leaders, and is coordinated by the University of Milano-Bicocca. The idea is to train the new generation of executives of national and international research infrastructures, equipping them with state-of-the-art managerial and leadership skills tailored to the needs of scientific service providers.
87 out of the 115 applications were submitted by individuals looking to complete the full programme. 28 were submitted by research infrastructure team members, 14 of which applied to do the full programme. The other 14 applied to do stand-alone modules. As far as the applicants’ background is concerned, the largest share of applicants consisted of life sciences professionals, followed by material sciences and analytical facilities professionals. There were nine applicants each from the biobanks, bioinformatics, and physical sciences and astronomy field. The vast majority of applicants were based in Europe. Notably, more women (55%) than men applied.
Since there is such great demand for training for managers of research infrastructures, it is very likely that another call will be opened next year, giving both new and returning applicants the chance to participate in this unique Masters programme.
